Swimming, Waves & Subways ~

It’s about an hour subway ride (2 train changes) from the Upper East Side (86th & Lexington) to this little jetty of heaven here on Far Rockaway Beach on the Atlantic O. Like most things in NYC, creating this experience requires a fair bit of effort to make it so. It takes engaging, traveling and navigating the many waves of big city, humanity rich, urban living. To handle these diversions competently and act consciously in response has demanded a significant upgrade in my own personal development, let me say.

Living here these past 2yrs has been an often demanding, master-in-the-making, extra study class in Humanity 909 - NYC style. It’s been a being-in-the-world, consciousness finishing school and the latest addition in my Life School curriculum. Most every day is a real life litmus test showing me how clear, calm and connected I actually Am. Or am not. And this is a good thing. Unless the higher Spiritual insights translate to time on the street, face to face, they’re really not worth so much. Or at least, not in a user-friendly kinda way and unless I can embody my awakening, express it and live it each day, what’s the point?

To be sure, returning here has been an essential and provisional challenge in every and all ways. Apparently, this has been a necessary experience for me to earn my chops to move up to a higher level of my, well … mastery. To pull this off requires I always find ways to shift proactively and move my energies more and more constructively. And consciously. At this point in my-yours-and our evolution, nothing much less will do.

A primary element in my awakening journey has been first learning, yet more importantly, putting into practice the conscious behaviors that keep creating equanimity and harmony in my life. On demand, as necessary, which here is like, all the time. These self-care practices I call my Constitutionals – the activities I do that keep me happy, healthy and sane - though not always in that order.

For instance, as an extremely physically active, body oriented guy, attending to my need for exercise is a numero uno, nonnegotiable must do. Especially living on this island of 10 million + people. If I don’t do this simple thing for myself daily (exercise), I feel frikkin’ nutz. Big time. Without a doubt, deep, rhythmic and conscious breathing is a primary tool in keeping your emotional body clear and clean. Believe it.

To compliment this aspect, I learned a while ago, I’m a total swimaholic and an ocean water freak. (It’s a Pisces Moon thing.) In my perfect world, a couple of times a week I need to be in it - swimming -  to create my best me. Thus, the necessary (and well appreciated) effort it takes to bike ride, ride the subway and bike ride some more to get to the beach. This is a noteworthy jewel in the guide to Awakening my Sacred – it’s in personally wanting to do what I really need to do that always brings Grace into my life. Please, no internal friction is a must.

Having practiced ‘Temple Strokes’ for many years now, I know how beneficial, along with transcendent being in the water actually is. For me, it’s total temple-time.
Whenever I swim, I always feel better in my body, my mind and my Spirit. Always. In this and other specific ways, I’ve learned to do these simple things for myself that consistently create feel good shifts in myself.

By attending to my basic nurturence needs (physically, emotionally, mentally and Spiritually), I don’t drain the world and all my relationships needing them to do this for me. In this way, I alone am responsible to man up for myself – while doing it from my awakened Heartspace. As I successfully swim into and through the many cross-currents coursing these days, I’ve learned to get out of my own way. And this has made all the difference in the world. It sure makes for a much smoother ride all the way around.

I swim with webbed, swim gloves to give me a fuller pull in the water, adding just a bit more oomph to my strokes. In this, it’s not about creating more efficiency, it’s about greater comfort, joy and yes – MORE FUN in the water. I also swim with a mask and snorkel, having long ago gotten tired of the turning neck and breathing water thing. Swimming like this allows me to breath holotropically – in one continuous, open breath - with no pause on the in or out breath. This creates an open energy circuit that allows me to go into altered or expanded states of awareness and for us consciousness junkies, this is pure delight. If I gotta ride 1hr (one way) for this, so be it.

No, it’s not swimming blissfully naked off the coast of Ibiza, warm in the Mediterranean Sea but hey, you gotta make your own paradise in life - wherever, whenever, however and with whomever you possibly can. Especially if it’s simply being with yourself. Especially. This too is a basic to Awakening your Sacred anything – you are your very own source of Love in your life. No one else gets this job. Only you. It’s in your willingness or resistance to align in your Soul Stream to your Source Self, in your own Sacred that determines your degree of Awakness in life. Happiness too.

Thank You & Love To Us All ~
